SANCTUARY Print

Prints of my biggest project so far! Extremely high detail, with a slightly aesthetic/indie vibe.

I created this work as part of a creative project for my History of Art AS-level. The prompt being 'sanctuary', I chose to explore several personal forms of sanctuary, for example the simplicity of childish things and playing with toys; the more general sense of sanctuary given by things such as dense atmospheres of rooms, bedrooms and the like; and the more personal sense in which certain elements (many of which are based on real things I have or used to have) are a personal sanctuary. The idea of assemblage and clutter, partly inspired by Joseph Cornell and his boxes of curiosity, is a re-expression of the chaos of memory and mind, divided roughly into rooms or groups, and sometimes boxed and hidden away in the shadows. Furthermore, my intention with the piece is to make the viewer feel lost in the imaginary world of the image, for it to take time to explore and wander across the work and dwell on the small details. With post-processing (colour balance etc) I have tried to give the impression not only of the dense atmosphere but also of the feeling of a hot, sunny, saturated summer afternoon, filtering down into darker depths with enhanced shadows, to further enhance the personality and vividity of the world it depicts.
